"This is part three of a four part Stones series (Sympathy Series). Charlie has always been an enigma, not only in his own band but in rock n’ roll in general. This English gentleman never seemed to get caught up in the lifestyle and somehow stayed true to his jazz roots while anchoring the legendary Rolling Stones.
I decided to stay true to this image and portray him as this English gentlemen after I read a story about Mick calling up to Charlie’s hotel suite one night from a hotel bar and demanded to know why “his drummer wasn’t down with the band”. This prompted Charlie to dress up in a full suit and tie, go downstairs, punch Mick in the mouth and state “don’t ever call me your drummer again”, then proceeded back upstairs and take off his suit.
Titling the Sympathy Series has been incredibly enjoyable to this point as I try to determine what lyrics in the song would exemplify the subject matter – I couldn't image a better title for Charlie than “what’s puzzlin’ you is the nature of my game”."
