"A few years ago, I was approached by some collectors out of California to do a commission of Rob Zombie–being a life long fan I quickly agreed. Almost immediately after receiving the finished piece, they started talking about an accompanying piece, this time of legendary Rob Zombie guitarist and solo artist, John 5. Having followed John 5’s career from the early Manson days, I was immediately intrigued. That’s where this piece took a bit of a unique twist.
Instead of my usual process of immersing myself in songs and videos prior to starting, the collectors had a unique idea. They decided they would like to be present when the inspiration for the concept struck. I couldn’t guarantee this, of course, but their proposal was a great idea none the less. Before I painted the piece, they decided to fly up to Canada and personally take me to a John 5 solo show and a meet and greet with the man himself.
The plan worked to perfection. Not only was John 5 one of the most humble and gracious people I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting, the show itself was one of the most inspiring concerts I have ever attended with an incredible mix of music, costumes and visuals. The whole thing played out like a horror movie or a very cool Halloween party, and the musicianship was like a punch to the mouth.
Being able to witness the transformation between the mild-mannered gentleman we had met a few hours earlier to the possessed character that took the stage was such a unique gift and definitely provided the inspiration we were all hoping for."
