"“Now dig this” …This piece started backwards for me. The concept came first and the appropriate subject followed. The original idea was to create a piece that focused on the time-honoured rock tradition of sacrificing your instruments.
Countless bands have taken to expressing themselves with this destructive habit. The Who, Deep Purple, Kiss, and Nirvana were just a few of these bands, but I decided to focus on the left-handed genius, Jimi freaking Hendrix. Although Jimi was no stranger to smashing guitars and amps, it was at the Monterey Pop Fest in 1967 that everything changed. Rolling Stone magazine even included it in their 2004 list of “50 Moments That Changed Rock & Roll”.
After witnessing The Who’s destruction of their instruments earlier at the same event, Hendrix decided he had to up his sacrifice game. He poured lighter fluid over his newly hand painted guitar and set it on fire. He would go on to mirror this event on three separate occasions. This level of sacrifice became my inspiration for the piece, and reflected the lyrics of one of his biggest hits." -Stickman
