"“The devil opened up his case and said, ‘I’ll start this show’ and fire blew from his finger tips as he rosined his bow”.
These were the lyrics and this painting was the image that came to me in a dream. This dream was solicited however (no, the devil didn’t visit me in a dream) – I was in a conversation regarding the Devil’s Trill Sonata (A.K.A Violin Sonata in G Minor) by Giuseppe T...artini. The legend has it that in 1713 Tartini was visited in a dream by the devil and he played a very complex violin piece. Upon awakening, Tartini tried to recapture the music he had heard in his dream and the Devil’s Trill was composed. To this day, it remains one of the most difficult violin compositions in existence and even Tartini himself admitted that it wasn’t as beautiful or complex as the version played to him by the Devil.
For obvious reasons this lead us to discussing the most bad assed country song ever written – “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” by The Charlie Daniels Band (also covered incredibly by The Zac Brown Band). This conversation assuredly lead to the dream where this painting was conceived. Although most my pieces are conceptualized in the middle of the night, they are usually done so while staring up at the ceiling during a bout with insomnia. This offering is the only painting I can think of where my subconscious did the conceptualizing and let me get some rest." -Stickman
